SEASONAL BUSINESSES ARE ENCOUNTERING PROBLEMS TO FILL JOBS AS US GOVERNMENT DISAPPROVES VISAS FOR FOREIGN WORKERS

Seasonal businesses are encountering problems to fill jobs as US government disapproves visas for foreign workers

Sunnypoint Landscape in Egg Harbor plans to develop building patios and planting shrubs these days, but passes up business due to labor scarcity.

The 32-year-old Door County firm finds it difficult to fill seasonal jobs generally acquired by foreign workers.

To begin with this year, when Sunnypoint Landscape applied for visas to sponsor those workers, it’s application was rejected.

The projects are being turned down because of shortage of the people to complete the project and due to this huge amount of business revenues are being lost every year. It creates a significant financial hardship and several companies are compelled to close down their business.

Sunnypoint Landscape has looked for H-2B visas that provides permission to seasonal employees working in outside agriculture — often in fields like landscaping, housekeeping and amusement parks — to reside in the country for up to a year.

But the government has deserted several American businesses that applied to sponsor H-2B workers empty-handed, with tens of thousands of positions unfilled.

This year several businesses didn’t get any H-2Bs in a national lottery, when an unexampled 81,600 of the visas were requested and only 33,000 were approved.
